Moving to Perth

OK so you've made the decision to move to Perth (or had it made for you) and you're now thinking "What on earth do I take with me and what do I leave behind". Not to worry, everyone has a slight panic at this and everyone has made mistakes including me.

We used to live in Warrington about 3 miles away from Ikea ergo we had a house full of Ikea lamps, rugs, tables... well you get the picture. Rugs, tables and so on weren't a problem of course but when it came to the lamps I made a huge mistake and it's all credit to my husband that he hasn't mentioned it once since we arrived, well only in arguments and of course, anything goes in them. Anyway I digress. So there was me thinking I can't take my lamps because they only take Ikea bulbs and of course I won't be able to get any more so I'll give them away (in case you're wondering my Mum was only too pleased to relieve me of them). Big mistake as guess what, there's an Ikea in Perth and in fact they're planning on building the largest one in the Southern Hemisphere up the road, can they rub it in any further? The point I'm trying to make in all this rambling is to DO YOUR HOMEWORK before you start to think about giving away your possessions to all and sundry.

I will help, however by giving you a list of things NOT TO BRING UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES and a separate list of things YOU CAN BRING IF YOU WANT TO GIVE IT A GO. You get from this of course that I am a list person and can rattle off my Top 5 anything if you so wish. It really isn't a male dominated area as Nick Hornby would have you believe in High Fidelity.

Anyway more of that later, the lists that is, not Nick Hornby.

Hi Ashely,

I'm not ignoring you I promise but I'm finding it difficult to find the info too!

I'll keep at it and check back in a couple of days to see if I've managed to find out anything for you please!

Cheers, Claire

Thank you for a most helpful website. Our family has just recently made the decision to emigrate after struggling with it for 3 years. We have decided on Perth and as I am a teacher education is very important to me as is raising my children as Christians. The Lake Joondalup Baptist College got my attention and from the info I've gathered on the city of Joondalup it looks like a wonderful place to raise a family. Could anyone give me some more info on the city and the school? And keep us in your prayers as we start this journey.

hello. i'm a doctor from south east asia, and i might be taking on a position with a hospital in armadale some time next year. i am single and will be moving to perth on my own, and i am terrified because i know absolutely no one in the city.

i was wondering if you could let me know how to go about finding a place to stay? my contract is for a year, and would love advice on what kind of place i can expect to find. i would prefer to live in armadale close to the hospital, but is it accessible from Perth itself? and would it be better for me to look for something in the city, as i will not have a car?

thanks!

claire

Hello,

My company produces the breakfast show Wake Up! WA. We're one of the only shows produced in the state, and one of the only shows in Australia that streams live on the web!

Hosting a link to our show can enhance your website as we are a great video resource when it comes to promoting the beautiful city of Perth!

Please contact me if you are interested. For more information: www.wakeupwa.com.au

Hello everyone. I am currently a student from the US studying veterinary science in Perth for the past 3 years.

A response about Armadale. I live very close to Armadale and I think it is a beautiful area. I live in Success right now and think it is wonderful as well. There are heaps (ha I am talking Aussie now) of new apartments and housing going up everywhere. Yes the housing market was a bit high lately but I believe you are getting what you pay for and what you pay for is wonderful.

It might be expensive, but I still see kids walking to school. Family and having time for it is very big here. The lifestyle is very outdoor oriented and very active.

For all of you with housing questions, this is the best article I have found to date. http://www.viacorp.com/perth-suburbs-compared.html

If anyone has questions they can contact me as well.

hi,i am a fully qualified hairdresser from Dublin, i am moving to Perth in the next few months and havent found a job or the best area for accomadation.if anyone has any helpful advice would be much appreciated. CHEERS.

Hi, I'm 16 and currently doing my GCSE examinations. to be honest, i'm bored of england! i want to move to australia and perth seems appealing. How different is the education system there from england? i would of been to college for two years (3 years maximum) if i stayed in england, to study engineering. i would then of been thinking about goin to university. is this any different in perth itself? will i need to attend a year of high school or something? any help would be much appreciated!

Also i have never been to Australia and not sure if suddenly "upping" and going is sensible, could anyone tell me if it's particular hard to adapt to australian life?

Thanks, Rich.

Hello

HI,

It is a very interesting web site where we get so much needful information!

My husband and I are planning to move to Perth next year. Actually, he is going to study at Edith Cowan University following a course in Accounting, while I am going to accompany him as dependent. In fact, I am a degree holder in Tourism and Hospitality Management and I do have some experience in Guest Relations and Marketing. We would like to know whether it is difficult to obtain a job (casual) and where to look for a casual job in our respective fields.

Thanking you in advance

Hi Claire

We will be moving to Perth at the end of the year. We have 2 primary school aged children so need to find a school as well as a place to live. Is there anywhere I can get comparative info on primary schools to help identify areas we might want to live or areas we might prefer not to ? (the so-called and controversial 'league tables') I remember seeing a table in a WA paper last year, but don't have a copy.

thanks
Liz

Hi

Looking to move to Swanbourne April 2009. Worried however that we will not be able to cary on my sons GCSE studies as we will only be there for 2 years and will be returning to the UK at the time when he is sitting his exams. He will also need to be doing GCSE course work through out the period we are there. Is anyone aware of an school that could help with this?

Hi Claire,

We also live in Warrington and we may have an opportunity to move to Perth on a sponsored visa.

We have a 5 yr old and wondered what areas have primary schools that are commutable to the kings Park area.

A top 5 what to take and what not to take would be great help, things like can you plug in the TV what are car prices like?

Hello,

I currently live in sydney, and Sydney's just getting overcrowded and too noisy. Is perth any much different? and why should i choose it instead of say brisban or melbourne

Hi there,
My partner has been given the opportunity to transfer over to Perth with his current job & is due to start in January. I've decided to move with him next year, but i think that my biggest worry is finding a job over there. I currently work in the finance industry & was wondering if many jobs are going over there. I've been on Seek.com.au and had a search around, but most of them are for high executive positions & i'm not quite at that level yet! Help :)

Hi Kylee,

Try www.jobs.wa.gov.au.. it's really good for jobs! sometimes you have to be permanent - but not in all cases.

Hi There,

My girlfriend and I are from Sydney and we are both 21 years of age, we're looking to move to Perth to live. We only had started researching the lifestyle in Perth but we need more feedback in relation to the lifestyle and work there. I work as an air-con mechanic and my partner is a sales co-ordinator. We want to live near the beach and the city. Which area location would you recommend for us to look into as we are starting our new life in Perth?

I currently live in Sydney, and Sydney's just getting overcrowded and too expensive. Is Perth any much different? Is Perth rather expensive to live in?

hi my name is gary as i currently living in melbourne but i decide to move to perth because of my education purpose so whats right i live in melbourne or i move to perth i get work and accomodation over there easily
can you please reply me
thanks

Hi
My husband & I are seriously thinking of moving to Oz. We have been for some years now and the more we think about it and look into it, we're more serious. We have passed the new points system but will apply for skilled visa next year after our trip there.
We are going over for a month next year, family moved over there last year and say it's the best thing they have ever done.
I'm now trying to research the costs of living over there, are there any hidden taxes? what taxes we actually pay?
My husband has been given a few contacts in The Mercedes Dealership to see what kind of work is over there, I work for a world wide company and would hope to carry on working for them, but I'm quite happy to do anything that is available.
We have no young children, ours is older and will be staying in the UK.
Does anyone have tips and practical info.
Regards
Louise

Hi,

I'm from Singapore and am moving to perth to work. When I rent a house, do I need my visa. I was hoping to rent a place before my visa is finalised. Thanks

Daniel

Hi,

I might be accepting a job in Perth soon, specifically in Perth CBD, near Subiaco. I'm 20, currently live in Sydney and have just finished my uni course and this will be my first time moving out of home.

I keep hearing that the living costs are pretty high! Any suggestions for cheapish places fairly close to the CBD to rent or share? I guess if I'm finding it hard to make ends meet I can always work a second job.

Thanks.

Hi,
My partner and I are thinking of moving to Australia and think that Perth may be the area for us, what we would like to know is what are the best areas to move which are close to the city but give some peace and quite as that is ideally what we would like to achieve. We have passed the points system to apply for a skilled visa but not sure whether it would be better to do a joint visa application as husband/wife?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Kathryn

Hi,

My partner is in the army, and it looks as if we have to move to perth soon.

I've grown up in Darwin, and am absolutely petrified about not being able to meet new friends.

When my partner goes on deployment overseas I won't have the support of anybody around me.
Are there any groups/organisations that can put me in touch with people in similar circumstances as me?

Thanks in advance

Sian (sharn) :)
