The Darling Range

The Darling Range (or the Perth Hills) is great for bushwalks and picnics. There are also excellent lookouts to see Perth and further down the coast.

The Range is also famous for its geological diversity - in the range you can explore evidence of the break up of Gondwanaland which one of only two ancient supercontinents.

Araluen Botanical Park

Just south of Kalamunda is Araluen Botanical Park and is a real gem.

Originally constructed in the 1920's by the Australian Bush League as a bush retrteat, the park was neglected for years and became overgrown.

Weekend Activites in Perth - Mundaring Weir

At the crest of the Darling Range, 40km from Perth, is Mundaring Weir, a dam constructed in the 1890's to provide water from the Goldfields Water Scheme.

The Avon Valley

The lush Avon Valley looks very English especially in Spring when it's wild flowers are at their height and was a tonic to homesick early settlers.

The valley was first settled in 1830, which was only a year after Perth was founded so there are many historic buildings in the area.

Weekend Activities in Perth - Northam & The Avon Descent

Northam is the major town of the Avon Valley and is a busy farming centre on the railway line to Kalgoorlie-Boulder. The railway from Perth once ended here and the miners had to make the rest of the trek to the goldfields by road.

Weekend Activities in Perth - Avon Valley National Park

The Avon Valley National Park is full of granite outcrops, forests and fauna. It's right at the northen end of the jarrah forests and the jarrah and marri mingle with wandoo woodland. This mix of trees provides diverse habitats for birds and animals.

As a result, it's great for bird watchers, as you can see rainbow bee-eaters, honeyeaters, kingfishers and rufous treecreepers.

Weekend Activities in Perth - Toodyay

Toodyay, according to everything you read about it, is described as a "charming small town". It is only 85km northeast of perth and used to be only visited by people stopping off on their way to New Norcia. Now, however, it is becoming a popular weekend destination in it's own right.
