The Avon Valley
The lush Avon Valley looks very English especially in Spring when it's wild flowers are at their height and was a tonic to homesick early settlers.
The valley was first settled in 1830, which was only a year after Perth was founded so there are many historic buildings in the area.
The valley was founded because food shortages forced the then Governor to look in the Darling Range for arable land and soon after his scout discovered the Avon Valley.
What he had actually found was the upper Swan River but the scout presumed that it was a separate river and so the river now changes it name from the Avon River to the Swan River when it crosses the Great Northern Highway.
The best way to see the valley is by car and the main areas to see are;
