Whiteman Park, Perth
Whiteman Park is a huge area (4200 hectares or over 10,000 acres) of parkland set aside for the public's use, most of it is bushland but some areas have been developed as picnic spots.
There are loads of things to do for a day out here;
- Catch a ride on the horse pulled tram
- Hop on the steam train for a tour of the park
- Picnic at Mussell Pool or near the Whiteman Park Village
- Have a look around the pioneer village where you can watch craftsmen at work
- For the more energetic there are over 30km of walking and bike paths as well as a childrens water playground in the village
- Take a look around Caversham Wildlife Park which is well worth a visit, all my visitors here have loved it (see the separate entry on Caversham Wildlife Park for more info)
Also, Whiteman Park always have a full school holidays programme to keep the kids entertained and educated. They also have an annual "Great Cocky Count" which requires people to count the endangered Carnaby's Black Cockatoos and "Thomas the Tank Engine" days for instance.
You can enter Whiteman Park from either Beechboro Road or Lord Street in Middle Swan which is 22 km from the city and approx 30 minutes drive. It is open 7 days from 8.30am to 6pm with no cost to get into the park.
You'll find all the info you need at www.whitemanpark.com.au which is a great website giving you all the details you could wish for.
