Wineries in and around Perth and Western Australia
Western Australia has over 150 wineries, the vast majority of which are located in four main regions;
- Swan Valley
- Margaret River
- Coastal
- Great Southern
Swan Valley
Please see "Guildford and the Swan Valley" for more information.
Margaret River
The Margaret River region is three hours drive south of Perth and is relatively new to producing wines, having only been "discovered" as perfect for vine growing about 35 years ago. However, it is the best of WA's wines that are produced here.
The first wineries to start up in this areas were Cullen Wines, Cape Mentelle, Moss Wood and Vasse Felix and these four founding wineried are the cornerstone of Margaret River and form the basis of the region's reputation among the great wine regions of the world.
There are now plenty of wineries all within a few kilometres of each other, many famous for their prize winning Cabernets.
The list of wineries is so long that it's impossible to list them all here, but the ones that stand out include; Leeuwin Estate, Voyager Estate, Devil's Lair, Hoawrd Park, Pierro, Moss Brothers, Juniper Estate, Brookland Valley and Willespie.
Many of the wineries have beautiful grounds and lovely restaurants with gorgeous food (and, of course, their own wines being served). The wineries with excellent restaurants attached include the following; Wise Vineyards, Cairault, Voyager, Vasse Felix, Cullen, Leeuwin and Brookland Valley.
Coastal
The coastal region runs from Wanneroo (three quarters of an hours drive north of Perth City) to Bussleton (2 and a half hours drive south of Perth City) which covers a huge area. The wineries are not grouped together so you need to be prepared to drive between them.
Paul Conti Wines (30 minutes drive due north of Perth) produces good chardonnay and shiraz.
Great Southern
The great southern region is made up principally of the triangle of Albany, Denmark and Mount Barker all of which are an approximate 5-6 hour drive south of Perth. The area is less established than the Margaret River but it is completely unspoilt by tourism.
You'll find some excellent Reislings and the area has also produced award winning Pinot.
The following is a short list of wineries in this region and what to look out for;
For dry white and red wines visit Alkoomi, Ferngrove and Frankland Estate, all in Frankland.
For Reisling and shiraz visit Plantagenet Wines, Forest Hill and Goundrey, all in Mount Barker and Castle Rock in Porongurup
For Pinot Noir visit West Cape Howe in Denmark and Old Kent River in Rocky Gully
For Cabernet Sauvignon, Reisling and Chardonnay visit Howard Park in Denmark and Wignall's Wines in Albany
Wine Day Tours
For wine tours with a difference, take a look at Wine for Dudes based in the Margaret River region. Each tour includes a delicious contemporary lunch at a winery along with a glass of wine, tastings at four or five premium sineries with discounts available at most of them, pick up and drop off transfers and a wine blending session where you make your own wine.

Thanks for our mention. We have overhauled our website and revamped it with a new look and feel! Check it out for the latest up to date info on the Dudes!
All the best,
