Researching the Past

Most family historians in Australia regard a convict in their ancestry as enormously desirable and should you decide to trace your family history there is a great website to take a look at and maybe use as your starting off point.

"Convicts to Australia" is intended to guide, inform and entertain those just starting the hunt as well as the more experienced researcher. The site is a 'work in progress' and data is being added regularly.

Aussie Words & Slang

Pinkflowersblock120806_2_1
A friend and I were talking the other day about why Australians call bedding "Manchester". Any bedding like duvet covers, pillow cases, sheets etc is all called Manchester. We still don't know the answer, so if anyone can fill us in, please feel free.

Then we progressed from that to other words that weren't familiar to us when we arrived and ended up with the makings of a list so here it is.

If you can think of any others please send a comment and we'll add it on, it can be a work in progress so to speak!

Solo Around the World Yacht Race to call in on Fremantle

FREMANTLE will host another yachting spectacle in December when the VELUX Oceans solo round the world yacht race arrives.

The race fleet will be spending several weeks in Fremantle as part of the 30,000-mile race around the globe, known as the ultimate solo challenge.

Fremantle will be the only Australian stop for the race which is incredibly challenging. The 10-yacht fleet of solo sailors start in Bilbao, Spain, in late October. They will reach Fremantle from December 5, and then enjoy an early Christmas break.

Stop the Rumours

I can't believe all the rumours flying about on the web and by email (and yes, I did receive a copy of the email last night) that Dante Arthurs is really Robert Thompson, one of the convicted killers of Jamie Bulger.

Both the Australian and British Governments have denied the claims and not suprisingly. Why would Australia, who have such stringent procedures to let anyone into the country, agree to a "prisoner swap" for someone who wasn't even born an Australian?

Would you really think that they would accept a convicted child murderer when they turn down scores of law abiding people every day simply because they haven't got enough points?

The poor family of Sofia Rodriguez-Urrutia-Shu need to be able to grieve without this circus going on and be able to know that their daughter's killer will get a fair trial and not be able to get off on a "technicality", like the jury was unfairly biased. If her murderer is convicted in a fair and unbiased trial, they may then be able to get some sort of peace.

The Wiggles are Back!

The Wiggles are playing the Burswood Dome on the exact same days that Robbie Williams is playing Subiaco Oval! But don't worry, their shows start at 10am and 1.30pm on each day so you'll be able to take the kids during the day and then feel guilt free to enjoy Robbie that night!

Weekend Activities in Perth - Rockingham

Rockingham to me is a peculiar place. It seems to be trying to promote itself as an upmarket weekend destination for Perthites but it's got a long way to go.

It's like a very English seaside town complete with an imported English sweet shop and cafes called the "English Rose" and "Winston's".

However, the main reasons to visit Rockingham are off-shore and include animals of the swimming variety.

Weekend Activities in Perth - Guildford and the Swan Valley

The lovely historic town of Guildford, classified by the National Trust, was one of the first colonial settlements in Perth.

Siutated on the Swan River, it was established in 1829 as an inland port, nowadays car loads of Perthites use it as a modern day stopping point on the drive to the Swan Valley, an area well known for it's food and wine in particular.
