Hover Fly "Plague" Hits Perth

Hover Fly
Originally uploaded by ElusiveByte.
If, like our family this last weekend, you had to put your hand up to your mouth to talk on the beach and stop flies from whooshing down your windpipe, apparently it's all to do with them looking for shelter from the easterly winds.

As the hoverflies eat aphids and pollinate as they go along they aren't the real pests even though having one stuck in your throat wasn't so nice on Sunday!

The real brutes and complete pests to look out for are the bush flies which possibly may be in more abundance this year as the dung beetles are a little late in arriving. Dung beetles need the ground to dry up to before they make an entrance and as the Winter rains arrived later this year, they seem to have missed their cue to wake up and start eating the dung and therefore the flies. Nice!
